EducationHi! My name is Melissa. I'm a dual degree master's student at Brandeis University's Heller School of Social Policy and Management. I graduated at the top of my class from the University of Pittsburgh in 2013, and for two years I taught English as a Second Language as an AmeriCorps member in Pittsburgh. I also taught classes on the American citizenship test.
ExperienceI taught English as a Second Language for two years, provided individual and class instruction for the U.S. citizenship test for two years, and have been tutoring Spanish, Italian, English, and writing skills since September 2012.
I have experience tutoring all levels of Spanish and Italian, including beginning language learners.
On the GRE I scored in the top 90th percentile for the reading and writing portions of the test. I've also tutored students in graduate level public policy classes on reading and writing.
I love being a teacher and tutor because of the satisfaction of seeing a student finally understand something that was difficult before. I try my best to work with each individual's learning style, and I try my best to accommodate scheduling conflicts and other potential issues. I have worked with typical students as well as individuals with various learning disabilities.
-AP Spanish through high school
-Italian minor in college
-History major in college
-Master's degrees in sustainable international development and coexistence and conflict in progress
-Independent study research paper
HobbiesI'm pretty busy with graduate school, but in my free time I love watching comedies and dramas, going to art museums, and going on road trips with friends. I studied abroad in South Africa in college, and I went on a week-long road trip with friends! It was great.
I'm hoping through my two master's degrees that I'll be able to work for an international organization like the United Nations or the American State Department.
